“Nga Manu e Rere” 2005

Andrea Hopkins painting practise reflects the influence of the American Abstract Expressionists on contemporary art in New Zealand, and the European concern for the sublime landscape.  But over the expressionist surface of her landscapes is woven the quiet articulated visual voice of a contemporary Northland artist whole Maori heritage and culture informs and inspires her exploration of the painted surface.

Hopkins’ work in “Out of the Blue” is evidence of this.  Both Hikoi, 2004, and Turangawaewae, 2004, expresses the artists concern with the stories of her people both past and present and her determination to express and record them in her own way.  Hopkins’ Modern Maori series speak of the ancient knowledge retained in the mind of contemporary Maori.
